Maria Cristina Menuti reports on the forum she led in Durham and the informative session she led in Tübingen as part of her BSHP Ambassadorship.
BSHP Ambassador Maria Cristina Mennuti led a an information session During the Πλατευριπιδίζειν conference at Durham University in May, organised by the Department of Classics and Ancient History and sponsored, among others, by the British Society for the History of Philosophy (BSHP). She reports:
‘I was glad to hold an information session introducing participants to the Society’s activities and opportunities. The roundtable explored how the BSHP operates, its prizes and fellowships, the valuable networking opportunities offered through its conferences and events, and the many benefits of membership. Particular attention was given to the support that the Society and its members provide to postgraduate students and early-career researchers, helping them achieve their academic goals and become part of a wider scholarly community. The session was a successful outreach activity! Several senior academics commented afterwards that they had not realised the extent to which their postgraduate students could benefit from the BSHP’s vibrant intellectual community and the range of opportunities it offers. The interdisciplinary nature of the conference, which brought together scholars from Philosophy and Classics, enabled the Society to reach audiences beyond the traditional boundaries of the history of philosophy as a discipline. At a time when academic life can easily become fragmented and highly specialised, such initiatives are precious in fostering a network of collaboration and exchanges!’
Maria Cristina Mennuti also led a session for students in Tübingen on on 22 July, dedicated to the methods of the history of philosophy and to BSHP's opportunities. In the forum, students raised questions regarding the relevance – or irrelevance – of studying the history of philosophy. Maria Cristina introduced the students to the awards, opportunities, the British Journal for the History of Philosophy, and the events sponsored by the BSHP, particularly attracting the attention of the MA students interested in pursuing a PhD and those wanting to continue their academic career abroad.
