Sandy Stewart

The BSHP was saddened to learn of the death of its first Chair, Professor M. A. (Sandy) Stewart.

Professor M A Stewart – Sandy to his friends – passed away on Friday 30th July 2021. He was 83. Sandy was the first Chair of the BSHP and one of its founders. The Society owes him a great debt of gratitude for putting the history of philosophy on the map when its place in the profession was questioned. A leading historian of 17th and 18th century philosophy, with particular focus on the work of David Hume, Sandy worked at Lancaster University for the whole of his career. A fierce enemy of any sloppiness in scholarship, he was quick to recognize quality and steadfast in supporting it.
