BSHP Postdoctoral Fellowship

The BSHP offers a bursary of £6000 to an Early Career Researcher of any nationality currently resident in the UK. The bursary is offered for a single academic year (application due on 31 January; fellowship commences in September of the same year). Applications are especially encouraged from ECRs from underrepresented groups, including candidates with disabilities, candidates from BAME backgrounds, first generation university students, and women.


Eligibility

  • ECRs who have successfully passed their PhD viva by the start of the fellowship, and who are within three years of having passed their PhD viva.
  • ECRs without a full-time or part-time paid academic position involving research.
  • Applicants holding higher education teaching positions are eligible, but priority may be given to applicants without any paid academic position.
  • Applicants who are applying to other funding schemes and positions are eligible to apply to this scheme. But if successful applicants to this scheme receive full funding from other sources, or are appointed to a full-time or part-time paid academic position involving research for the fellowship year after being awarded the BSHP fellowship, they should inform the , copying in , as soon as possible so that the BSHP fellowship can be allocated to the next ranked applicant.

Application

  • CV including:
    • date of their viva; title of their PhD; institution which awarded their PhD
    • which academic position, if any, the applicant is currently holding
    • which funding, if any, the applicants are receiving, have received, or expect to receive for the course of study relevant to their application and during the year of their fellowship
    • if applicable and if they wish, applicants should state in their CV to which underrepresented group they belong
  • Summary of research project, including an outline of the work they plan to do if they are successful (MAX 500 words)
  • Planned outcome of their research project (e.g. paper to be submitted to a refereed journal; monograph)
  • Name and contact details of a referee. The referee should be someone well acquainted with the academic work of the candidate, who should comment on past performance as well as potential.

Deadline for applications and references: 23:59 (GMT) on 31 January each year.

Applications will be assessed on the rigour, significance, originality, and feasibility of the research project, and on the academic record of the applicant.

  • Applicants should send their application as a SINGLE FILE to , copying in , by the deadline and ask their referee to send a confidential reference letter to the same by the same deadline.
  • Incomplete applications (e.g. applications missing the reference letter by the deadline) will not be considered.
  • Please note that successful applicants who are not currently members of the BSHP will be required to become a BSHP member.
  • Due to the high number of expected applications, the BSHP will be unable to provide feedback. The decision of the BSHP assessment panel will be final.
