Report from Luca Dondoni's PGR / ECR Careers Session

On 16 October 2026, BSHP Ambassador Luca Dondoni organised and moderated an online career information session for BSHP members. Read Luca's report here.

Four panellists at different career stages shared their experience of moving between the UK and Continental Europe: Dr Maria Cristina Mennuti (Tübingen), Dr Giulia De Cesaris (Turin), Dr Antonio S. Borge (Nottingham) and Prof. Elena Cagnoli Fiecconi (UCL). They talked about each stage of an academic career, from applying for a PhD in the UK to getting a permanent post. Topics included the role of publications, the importance of teaching experience, and the value of mobility and conferences. The panelists also discussed when to start preparing postdoc applications and research projects, the main steps in putting together a job application, and how to handle unexpected questions in interviews. Participants sent their questions in advance. This worked especially well, because they could shape the discussion without raising questions about their own careers in front of others. Both the panelists and the participants found the session extremely timely and valuable for early-career researchers.

Thank you Luca and all who participated!
